Located in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang boasts a distinctive dry landscape characterized by deep canyons, limited plateaus, and eroded rock formations. The highlight of the trek is the opportunity to explore the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, once a crucial center for trade and Buddhism along the trans-Himalayan route.
Trekkers pass through beautiful communities with well-preserved traditional Tibetan culture and architecture. The journey includes visits to ancient monasteries with elaborate murals and sculptures as well as insights into the local way of life. A distinctive cultural event, the vibrant Tiji festival is a three-day Buddhist celebration that frequently falls during the trekking season. Additionally, Upper Mustang is home to numerous ancient cave dwellings, some of which are adorned with intricate murals and carvings.
