The Story Behind Manram Himalayan Voyages
Imagine a young boy, born in 1958 under the towering gaze of Mount Everest, with nothing but dreams and determination. This is Manram’s story, and it will inspire you to reach for the stars—or in his case, the highest peaks.
Driven by dreams of a better life, Manram left his challenging past to seek opportunities in the Khumbu region. From the humblest of beginnings as a kitchen helper, Manram’s journey is a testament to the human spirit. In an era of undeveloped trekking routes, Manram’s culinary skills became his ticket to adventure. With each step—from porter to cook, from guide to mountaineer—Manram climbed not just physical mountains, but the mountains of adversity. His infectious laugh and warm heart became his passport, opening doors across Nepal, China, Pakistan, France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland.
Despite limited formal education, his fluent English and magnetic personality – friendly, joyful, and outgoing – quickly made him a favorite among trekkers. Manram’s mountaineering feats were impressive: conquering Ama Dablam (6,812m), Mera Peak (6,476m), and Island Peak (6,165m). His 1987 ascent of Kanchenjunga South without supplemental oxygen and his daring 1991 attempt on Everest’s Hornbein Couloir showcase his exceptional skill and courage.
Manram’s adventurous spirit led to a life-changing friendship with Alain Hubert, Chairman of the International Polar Foundation. This connection took Manram from the Himalayas to Antarctica in 2007-2008, where he helped construct the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica – the world’s first zero-emission polar research station. As both builder and cook, Manram’s versatility shone in the harsh Antarctic environment. His resilience and dedication made history: he became the first Nepalese to reach this remote corner of the Earth. This extraordinary expedition cemented Manram’s reputation as an adventurer whose journey spanned from the world’s highest peaks to its southernmost reaches.
Though he is no longer with us, the name ‘Manram Himalayan Voyages’ stands as a heartfelt tribute to his extraordinary journey and the spirit of adventure he infused into every trek. His legacy lives on through this company, lovingly established by his daughter to ensure that his name and the values he cherished—resilience, passion, and a deep respect for the majestic Himalayas—continue to inspire others.
